Bian Dang Magazine

At the height of Covid-19 in 2021, when anti-Asian hate continued to grow in the United States, a group of friends set out on a personal mission to uplift their communities and celebrate Asian culture. Introducing Bian Dang, a project that brought four Taiwanese-American friends together as they sought to revisit nostalgia and pride through Taiwanese food culture.

We’ve always wanted to create something that evoked a sense of home. To us, Taiwanese food is more than just a series of dishes; it’s a walking tour tasting menu of memories. Mornings hurrying past a corner food stall, a sip of comfort while growing through life stages, a common thread between mom and daughter, or a porcelain bowl cradling soupy noodles.

便當 (bian dang) are takeout lunch boxes, paper sandwich trays stuffed with side dishes, and they parallel our fragmented Taiwanese-American identities. Thanks for stopping by and sampling a morsel of our favorite moments, bundled together into one familiar lunch box.

開飯 (kai fan, or bon appetit)!

We created social-first teasers to promote the launch of Bian Dang Magazine on Instagram, such as this teaser video and several Instagram Stories (see below).

Bian Dang Magazine features personal vignettes about the sense of home Taiwanese dishes, such as milk tea or pan-fried pork buns, brings to four friends.
